If you are running a 64-bit version of Windows, you may assume you have a 64-bit version of Google Chrome. Unless you downloaded 64-bit Chrome on purpose, chances are good you are running the 32-bit version. Unlike the Firefox 64-bit release in December, 2015, Chrome 64-bit has been available since mid-2014. At the time, Google touted Chrome 64-bit as having 'many benefits for speed, stability and security.' But how would you even get 64-bit Chrome for 64-bit Windows even if you wanted it?
Make sure you have a 64-bit version of Windows. On Windows 7, click the Start button, and launch Control Panel. Click System & Security, then click System. Under the System section of the page, see System Type. It should say 64-bit Operating System. On Windows 10, click the Start button, and launch Settings. Click System, and scroll down the left navigation to About. For System Type, look for 64-bit operating system.
Next, make sure you are not already using Chrome 64-bit. Click the Customize and control Google Chrome button, an icon with 3 horizontal bars located to the right of the web address bar. Select Help > About Google Chrome:
Or you can type chrome://help/ into the address bar to navigate to the About Google Chrome window. Chrome will check for updates. If an update is available, it will begin to download immediately. If 64-bit does not display to the right of the version number, you are running a 32-bit version of Chrome.
Download and install Google Chrome 64-bit
By default, Google offers a 32-bit version of Chrome when you visit the Chrome download page. To get 64-bit Chrome for 64-bit Windows, click the Download Chrome for another platform link.
In the pop-up window that displays, click the Windows 10/8.1/8/7 64-bit link under Download for another desktop OS. You can also navigate right to the Google Chrome 64-bit download page. Read the Google Chrome Terms of Service, then click the Accept and Install button.
64-bit Chrome will download. A dialog will display the download progress.
Once downloaded, 64-bit Chrome will install on your computer. You may need to close your 32-bit Chrome browser for the installation to proceed. A dialog will display the installation progress. The settings from your 32-bit Chrome installation will remain intact in the 64-bit version.
Next time you launch Google Chrome, return to About Google Chrome. You will see 64-bit display to the right of the version number.
